Vis & Ramin is one of the world’s great love stories. It was the first major Persian romance, written between 1050 and 1055 in rhyming couplets. This remarkable work has now been superbly translated into heroic couplets (the closest metrical equivalent of the Persian) by the poet and scholar Dick Davis.
Vis and Ramin had immense influence on later Persian poetry and is very probably also the source for the tale of Tristan and Isolde, which first appeared in Europe about a century later.
The plot, complex yet powerfully dramatic, revolves around royal marital customs unfamiliar to us today. Shahru, the married queen of Mah, refuses an offer of marriage from King Mobad of Marv but promises that if she bears a daughter she will give the child to him as a bride. She duly bears a daughter, Vis, who is brought up by a nurse in the company of Mobad’s younger brother Ramin. By the time Vis reaches the age of marriage, Shahru has forgotten her promise and instead weds her daughter to Vis’s older brother, Viru. The next day Mobads brother Zard arrives to demand the bride, and fighting breaks out, during which Vis’s father is killed. Mobad then bribes to hand Vis over to him. Mobad’s brother Ramin escorts Vis to her new husband and falls in love with her on the way. Vis has no love for and turns to her old nurse for help....
Told in language that is lush, sensual and highly inventive, Vis and Ramin is a masterpiece of psychological perceptiveness and characterization Shahru is worldly and venal, the nurse resourceful and amoral (she will immediately remind Western readers of the nurse in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet), Vis high-spirited and determined, Ramin impetuous and volatile. And the hopeless psychological situation of Vis’s husband, Mobad, flickers wearily from patience to self-assertion to fury and back again. The origins of Vis and Ramin, are obscure. The story dates from the time of the Parthians (who ruled Persia from the third century bce to the third century ce), and certainly existed in oral and perhaps written form before the eleventh century Persian poet Fakhraddin Gorgani composed the version that has come down to us

I recently learned that I really like Persian poetry, and that Dick Davis was the most talented translator for Persian poetry in all the world, probably. Vis and Ramin is a romantic epic that was written in the 11th century, but could date hundreds of years before. You'd probably think *yawn, history* but you'd really be quite wrong. Vis and Ramin is nearly timeless and written in beautiful poetic form. There's very little of the story that won't make sense, except for a few Persian city names, mapped in the beginning of the book. You'll certainly find yourself wishing that more people were as emotional as Vis and Ramin were throughout the story. It's a breath of fresh air from the shallow "TWERKIN N DA CLUB" culture we're sadly polluted with. What struck me as strange was that this book is an undiscovered secret to English readers. As you can see by the limited amount of reviews here, the lack of any tweets, and the 150 fan Facebook page, we just haven't discovered Vis and Ramin yet. But maybe somebody will do us all a favor and convert the story into a movie (which I promise would do well).I was so impressed by Vis and Ramin, I found myself bitter that my high school wasted time on crap like "the odyssey" which was both unpoetic and droned on with overtly literal translation that drowned the entire story of what could have been it's original elegance. Dick Davis painstakingly made sure to translate not only story and metaphors, but the very rhythm and aural eloquence of the story, which may not be the most literal translation, but one that's sure to transform English readers into huge fans of this beautiful niche of historical literature.
Some notes:
* Vis and Ramin avoids much of the mysticism that can be found in other Persian poetry, if you are trying to avoid it yourself or avoid it on behalf of your children, you're fine here.
* There are no fewer than a dozen references to "husband-brother" which LOL because Vis takes it so seriously but some writings from this period use blood relationships romantically as a literary feature.
* There's a great introduction about other Persian literature and background/significance in the beginning of the book
* Dick Davis himself said the most eloquent part of the book is the fourth section of Vis' letter to Ramin (page 340). It ended up being my absolute favorite part of the story.
* Plenty of good little pieces (rhymes) for letters to your girl, dudes! Step up your romance game a bit.

I thought I would get a version as pictured, but I got the penguin version instead. It is also used and kind of messed up.

Love is eternal for all ancient civilizations. It is not mere chemical reaction, "evolutionary instinct" nor "active brain function" as our modern science teaches us.....
Maybe that's why there is so many violence, hatred, perversion and destruction in the world.
What a fascinating poem! It's so interesting to read such an ancient story and have it be enjoyable. I commend the translator for their wonderful work.
This translation by Dick Davis is superb. It is a love story with tenderness, betrayal, and war motivated by love. This is an epic that matches the Helen of Troy story.
